How Plan G Covers You
Each of the Supplement plans come with their own medical benefits. These benefits have been guaranteed by Medicare. So, even though private insurance companies sell Plan G, they don’t get to decide what medical benefits it will include. They can set the prices, though, and yet even when the prices change, the benefits remain the same.
Medicare Supplement Plan G will give you full coverage for Medicare Part A supplemental expenses. It gives you coverage for the hospice coinsurance, Part A’s copayments and Part A’s annual deductible (which is $1,408).
Plan G also gives you some Part B coverage, taking care of the cost of the copayments for each visit to the doctor’s office, emergency room and more, and then it also covers the cost of the Part B excess charges. Those are charges you would normally have to pay on your own if you go outside of Medicare’s network for your healthcare services. You won’t get coverage for the Part B annual deductible of $198, though. That is something you will have to pay for yourself.
Plan G will take care of nursing care costs as well, at any Medicare-approved skilled nursing care facility. It also covers you for foreign travel exchange, up to 80% for each time you need to be transported out of the country, with a lifetime limit of $50,000.
The final bit of coverage provided by Plan G is for your blood usage. Original Medicare covers you for all but the first three pints of blood for the year, and then the Supplement Plan G will take care of those remaining three for you, giving you complete blood coverage.
These medical benefits are the same across all insurance companies and from year to year. Medicare rarely makes changes to its Medicare benefits, so you can expect the same coverage next year for the foreseeable future with Plan G.

One thing to keep in mind about Supplement plan pricing is that your preexisting medical conditions can affect the prices, but only if you enroll after age 65. If you choose to enroll sometime after your 65th birthday, you will have to sign up during the Annual Enrollment period, starting on October 15th and running until December 7th of each year. Your preexisting medical conditions can factor into the price at that point and cause you to pay more for your plan than you would otherwise.
Comparing Plan G to Other Options
There are more Medicare Supplement plans than just Plan G. A few of the Supplements plans are quite similar and offer nearly identical medical benefits.
Plan F is probably the closest to Plan G in terms of coverage. With Plan F, you get to enjoy all of the same medical benefits as you would with Plan G. The one difference between these two plans when it comes to medical benefits is that Plan F will cover you for the Part B annual deductible of $198, and Plan G does not. The cost difference between these two plans is anywhere from $20 a month to $100 or so a month, so Plan F can be very expensive and may not be the best choice for a senior who is trying to save as much money as possible.
Plan N is similar as well. It covers a lot of the same benefits as Plan G, but simply takes off coverage for a few Part B expenses. Under Plan N, you would be required to pay the Part B excess charges and some of the Part B copayments, as well as that Part B annual deductible. Comparing prices between the two plans shows that there is often a $20 difference per month, but Plan N can sometimes be even cheaper.
